Desperately searching for something to fix

I just saw this headline: “Kamala Harris: Voting Rights Is The Fight Of Our Lifetime.”

What kind of a person is motivated by a statement like that?

This is “the fight of our lifetime” — as if it’s everybody’s duty to go around looking for the right fight.

A lot of assumptions are packed into that attitude.

They’re the sort of people who, in the 1970s, were upset they weren’t around to protest in the 1960s. Life is one long struggle session to “improve” things, and they — the right-thinking — are just the people to do it.

  1. QUOTE: What kind of a person is motivated by a statement like that?

Likely a patriot…one that wants to ensure that a fundamental right is preserved and available to all Americans who are eligible to vote. It’s akin to those who consistently advocate (nearly every election cycle) to ensure the 2nd amendment is protected, despite it being enshrined within the Constitution.

It would be interesting to get commentary from VP Harris (or a representative) on that statement and compare that to your interpretation. I suspect there could be assumptions on your part.

It seems the GOP is looking for the right fight. For instance, despite no legally confirmed evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, a number of conservative state legislator are creating “voter integrity” bills. In fact, in the history of US elections there hasn’t been any significant evidence of widespread voter fraud. Given that, it seems as if the GOP’s efforts are a solution in search of a problem.

  2. Seems a little ridiculous to be hearing that complaint. I mean, wtf do evangelicals and other religious think? They think they have some kind of mission to go around converting people and thereby setting the world right.

To be upset about Harris having some kind of mission like this seems off.

    1. Well, first of all, who says the Evangelicals are right, and second, the Evangelicals have a relatively specific agenda about what they want. Other people seem to just want to find something wrong that they can fix.

Another thing to consider: I can easily imagine a scenario in which Evangelicals would be generally satisfied with the political state of the world. They’d still want to save souls and such, but they wouldn’t be agitating for change. I can’t imagine that scenario with the people who have the “this is the fight of our lifetime” bug.

Who’s to say that change isn’t required in some situations and these people aren’t the ones to do it? Without such, some liberties might not be accessible to some Americans. For instance, some had to fight to legally marry someone of a different race. Others had to fight for the right to vote, despite being a citizen. Some are still fighting for equal representation. DC residents pay taxes, but they don’t have representation like other tax-paying American citizens. So, for DC residents, the fight for a lifetime continues. BTW, wasn’t taxation without representation a catalyst for another major change in US history?

That said, it seems these “agitators” come from various political persuasions and walks of life. For instance, there are fighters for election integrity, healthcare, LGBT rights, religious freedom, right to bear arms, abortion, and the list goes on. It’s interesting to note that each side feels the issues they agree with are worthy fights to be waged indefinitely. Yet, many times, these same “fighters” will deny the value of the fight (even mock) those who advocate for causes in which they disagree…as if it’s a ridiculous notion to fight for a more perfect union.
