NYC Restaurateurs: It’s Not Our Job to Enforce Vaccine Mandates

My first reaction to this was my irritation with the government for pushing yet another enforcement issue onto businesses, and to wonder where they get the authority to do it. Then I remembered that restaurants are already required to check ID before they sell alcohol, so … I guess it’s generally within their bailiwick.

However, (1) I don’t think it’s good practice in general to force businesses to have to do too many things like this, and (2) as the restaurant owners ask, why just them? Why not Home Depot, CVS, etc.? (In general, it seems the big boys are getting favorable treatment in the pandemic.)

As with so many of these Covid things, this seems rather “seat of the pants.”

  1. Restaurants and bars do have people more crowded and presumably that makes Covid transmission easier than in an airy big box store. And, in the bbs, maybe people can usually keep their 6 feet. Idk, how much of a difference it makes with delta.

Depends on laws whether bars and stores are required to check id before selling liquor. I haven’t gotten carded in a while. They are prohibited from selling to minors, but not necessarily required to check…they check because of the penalties for breaking the law. Of course, some jurisdictions might require the check…you know, great grandpa with his Iwo Jima cap, cane, and VFW jacket walking all hunched over…sir, can I see your ID? You forgot it at home, well, sorry.

    1. In some places in Maryland they card everybody. It’s very silly. I haven’t looked until 21 since I was 17.

    2. Honestly, I don’t think businesses should be enforcing mask mandates except their own personal ones. If they want to say, “no shirt, no shoes, no mask, no service” , fine with me. I just remember compliance has always been sketchy and folks that don’t wear masks when there is a mandate are generally assholes–they’re the type to curse employees out or get violent.

I switched jobs recently, prior to that I worked 8 months at Fortune #1. Got to dig through code, see changes over the years. Used to be there was an option when a credit card got declined that the cashier would get a message, “confiscate card.” They don’t do that any more. It’s not their enforcement problem. Imagine being wrong and getting sued, or a person who is criminally using a card and you take the card away. Maybe they’re not just gonna sit there and let you do it.

  2. Son sent me link that at Texas A&M University, they are going to require proof of Ivermectin consumption if you want to enter Kyle Field to watch any games this football season.

    … jk
