I think “conservatives” must be trying to conserve brain cells when they try to make a comparison to a fence around the capitol and the southern border. With cameras and four sharpshooters, the whole grounds could be secure from someone trying to breach it. With a 2,000 mile border…good luck. Glad you could protect the good white folks from Jose and Maria just trying to feed baby Jesus.
But, all that’s moot, because the southern border is now secure because “conservatives” elected Trump whose #1 promise was to build a wall, and since he always keeps his promises because he’s such an upstanding and capable guy, we know that there is a wall there…even if we can’t see or touch it.
And he made Mexico pay for it!
A much more sensible reply (if you want to argue against a border wall) would be to quote Patton: “fixed fortifications are a monument to the stupidity of man.”
Of course the fence around Congress is different from the border wall, just as the fence around Pelosi’s home is different from either. But bumper sticker rhetoric (“walls don’t work”) can’t insist on nuanced criticism.
Just add one more word and it kills the criticism: “Border walls don’t work.”
It kills that particular criticism, yes. But there are lots of countries in the world that have border walls. They obviously think they’re worth while.
Border walls are uncivilized.
QUOTE: Walls don’t work and they’re immoral”.
Context is crucial. Given the significant differences in context, it’s silly to apply the border wall statement to the Capitol Building fence. Yet, for grins and giggles, it’s interesting to note some key distinctions:
• The southern border wall was supposed to protect against an alleged “invasion” of illegal immigrants/foreign terrorists that would commit violent crimes. The Capitol Building fence was erected after an actual attack on the Capitol Building (by US citizens – supporters of the former president intent on overturning the election, killing government officials and possibly establishing a different government) with threats of further attacks.
• Seven thousand active-duty troops were deployed to the southern border weeks prior to any potential threat from foreign asylum seekers. Yet, there was an insufficient number of police to maintain order at the Capitol Building and the National Guard was significantly delayed in responding to an “actual” attack by so-called patriots committing criminal acts.
• Despite four years, the border wall was never erected (as advertised) nor funded by Mexico (as promised). Regardless the dire warnings of the impact of the impending “invasion”, the level of predicted carnage never materialized. The Capitol Building fence and street barriers were erected within days after the attack by domestic terrorists…resulting in property damage and death.
