My prediction. The Taliban will require $1 million for each American allowed out of Afghanistan.
Should we let Afghans in?
William asks, in a comment below, …
Since this has now been recognized as a humanitarian disaster by some conservatives, I wonder if they’d be willing to allow Afghanis to immigrate to the US? Or will they merely criticize Biden and complain about how bad it is for political advantage?
The only thing I am certain conservatives will do is rush to surrender their principles and/or dilly dally while the Left gets its way, so I don’t particularly care what “conservatives” think or do — even though I consider myself a conservative.
I do not think we should allow Afghans into the U.S. Certainly not in large numbers.
Everything I’ve seen and heard for the last 20 years, and everything I’ve read about Afghanistan before that time, shows they are not a good cultural fit. They don’t believe in a Republican form of government, their family structure / practice is atrocious, and I don’t want more Muslims in this country.
While there is room for some charity in our immigration policies, the vast bulk of it should be based on American self interest. I.e., what people will fit in and contribute. Afghans score very low on both of those counts.
Probably the best thing the U.S. could do is help resettle Afghans fleeing the Taliban into neighboring countries.
I would criticize Biden for the Afghan mess
But there’s no need. Might as well call water wet.
The slide into totalitarianism via “Menticide”
This is a decently interesting video.
It’s about how a society can be moved towards totalitarianism.
“Menticide” means killing of the mind.
The idea of “monotonously repeated nonsense” seems quite apt for the world today.
It’s interesting that two of the preparations for totalitarianism are isolation and progressive waves of fear.
What could possibly explain Biden’s fall in the polls?
That he’s bungled American energy policy? That he sounds like he’s got advanced dementia? That he’s been ham-handedly (and dishonestly) attacking a successful and popular governor? That stories about his own (past) sexual abuse issues have started to ease into public consciousness?
Maybe, but the 538 blog has it’s only collection of possible reasons: What’s Behind Biden’s Declining Approval Rating
- It’s normal and expected, given recent experience.
- Could be the twists and turns with Covid.
- Independents have soured on Biden as he’s been revealed not to be the moderate we were told.
- Concerns about the economy.
Those all seem reasonable to me.
I think the bottom line is that we have a new political reality. There’s a percentage that will support a candidate — almost no matter what he does — simply because he’s on “our side,” and we can’t give an inch to those horrible cretins on the other side. The opposite also holds: there’s a percentage who will never support a guy from the other side. That provides both a floor and a ceiling for approval ratings.
