Gov. Abbott finally shows some spine

I have not been impressed with Gov. Greg Abbott. He has been far too soft on the border problem.

But he’s finally showing some spunk.

Governor Abbott Directs Texas to Send Illegal Migrants to D.C. on Charter Buses

“To help local officials whose communities are being overwhelmed by hordes of illegal immigrants who are being dropped off by the Biden administration, Texas is providing charter buses to send these illegal immigrants to Washington, D.C.”

I hope other states take similar measures.

Raising little activists

Years ago I met a lovely young woman at a publishing conference. She was starting a line of books for children, and I’ve kept a casual eye on her progress. She seems to be doing well.

But she’s trying to make books that “catalyze meaningful change.” This worries me.

Kids don’t need to be concerned about saving the planet. They need to learn how to clean their room, be nice to their siblings, get their homework done ….

This modern effort of pushing adult concerns (whether legit or not is a separate question) down on children is very unhealthy. Let kids worry about kid-level things!

Is this the long-awaited kraken?

There’s been a lot of talk from Trump and his supporters about voting irregularities, and how the 2020 election was rigged and/or stolen. So far, the evidence has been less than persuasive.

There was cheating (there’s always cheating), a lot of the rules were bent because of the pandemic, and there were some generally weird things going on, but so far, no one has been able to prove that the weird stuff was significant enough to change the result, or even that it all trended in one direction. Some Republicans were caught cheating too.

Now we seem to have the first serious attempt with actual data. New report: 255,000 ‘excess votes’ for Biden in six key 2020 states

I’m not endorsing this or claiming anything about the election, but it is worth noting, and it will be interesting to see how this story plays out.

The slap

I assume you’ve all heard about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife.

My understanding is that Jada Pinkett Smith has been struggling with hair loss, so she shaved her head. Chris Rock made a joke at the Oscars, saying she was ready to play in G.I. Jane 2. Will Smith laughed at the joke, but then saw his wife’s reaction, went up on stage and slapped Chris Rock, then went back to his seat and rudely told Rock not to talk about his wife.

On the positive side, I have to say I approve of a man standing up for his wife, and I’m glad Chris Rock is not pressing charges. If you’re going to be a comedian, you have to be ready to get punched or slapped from time to time. You are, after all, playing it right up close to the edge. That’s what comedians do.

On the negative side, if you’re going to be in the public eye, you have to expect a little ribbing. It goes with the territory. Although it’s hard for a man to sit idly by while his wife is the brunt of the joke.

Overall, I think our culture doesn’t have enough punches and slaps. That is 100 times more healthy than cancel culture, safe spaces, etc.
