RIP, Notorious RBG.
With the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the left has gone apocalyptic and Republicans are trying to say “never mind” about the things they said re: Merrick Garland.
While RBG became a feminist icon later in life, feminists didn’t like her at first, for two reasons: first, her friendship with Scalia, which seemed to throw shade on her liberal credentials, and second, the fact that she transferred to Columbia to accommodate her husband. What a bad, bad thing to do!
P&C review the political circus and talk generally about the Supreme Court.
Well, I had nothing against ACB, I thought, Catholic, ok. After all, I married one. But, then I heard she was a charismatic…don’t know if I like that. Well, not true…I do know, and I don’t like it. I have more confidence in a reticent Jew or an atheist than a charismatic.
But, so far, her rulings haven’t been anything that bothers me.
Charismatics totally creep me out.
I see no problem with the Ten Commandments. Beyond that, if she gets confirmed, hopefully she’ll keep to herself any beliefs concerning tongues-speaking, prophesy, “healing services”, “being slain in the spirit”, “snake-handling” and the like.
I would certainly have a problem with someone actually legislating the Ten Commandments. Just imagine a law saying that you must keep the sabbath holy! You have every right to do that as you understand it (as people obviously understand it in radically different ways), but we certainly don’t want a law of that kind. What creeps me out about a charismatic is that it seems to go together with a mental derangement that could have some rather nightmarish consequences. I would also have profound misgivings about someone who thought that we were most definitely living in end times (cf. “The Late Great Planet Earth”). Of course people have every right to believe that sort of thing, but they have no place in any of the branches of government, as far as I am concerned.
So is the standard to keep church and state separate or to only separate out aspects of the church a certain group doesn’t like and the rest is permissible in the administering of the law?
Far be it from me to propose an absolute standard. I’m only expressing my personal perspective.
I find it weird that a PAC by the Koch brothers is lobbying the American people to support the nomination of ACB. I saw the ad last night on prime time. Weird.
