  1. Man, I hear so much conflicting stuff. One thing I heard suggested that Putin has yet to really release the kraken, so to speak, so the initial setback might just unleash firepower that’s been held in reserve, with disastrous results. Not necessarily nuclear, but much heavier air force involvement, heavier tactical bombs, etc.

But I have no idea if that’s any more right than this article. I really hope the more optimistic takes are the correct ones.

  2. I remember all the OrthoBros being upset at the US/Clinton bombing Serbia during Pascha (Easter). Hell, they still talk about it. For the Orthodox, Great Lent will start on Monday and it’s supposed to be a time of repentance, especially the first Monday and the first week more than others. It will be interesting to see if Russia is still engaged in attacking Ukraine next week come Monday. I wonder if Putin thought he’d be done by the start of Great Lent? I wonder if all the pro-Putin OrthoBros will be condemning him if he keeps on the attack after Great Lent start. (I won’t be holding my breath.)

It’s not as if Ukraine is a bunch of infidels like Chechnya or Afghanistan. The vast majority of Ukraine is Orthodox, and the vast majority of the Orthodox are under under the Moscow Patriarch(ate) (MP)–there is a small independent Ukrainian Orthodox recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarch (EP) (i.e. Constantinople) but not the MP. Some of the bishops under the MP in Ukraine have stopped commemorating the MP in the prayers because the MP has not said one strong word against the aggression.

    1. Interesting point about Lent.

It’s a shame the Moscow Patriarch wasn’t able to talk Putin out of this.

          1. Yeah,

I call on all parties to the conflict to do everything possible to avoid civilian casualties.

Yeah, don’t stop your aggression, just please don’t target civilians…

But, if you talk to some Russians, they’re convinced genocide of ethnic Russians is happening in East Ukraine, western Ukraine is populated by Nazis, and Zelensky is a puppet of the US. Putin has done a good job of shaping how things are perceived in Russia. I was shocked on LinkedIn to read all the hate for the US and some even blaming “the Zionists” for all of this.

We didn’t help our standing in the world by an unjustified attack on Iraq and our interference (Libya) elsewhere. Our invasion of Afghanistan was probably justified to get bin Laden, but he was living in Pakistan when we finally got him…and I bet the Pakis knew he was there…supposedly they are our allies.
