Vaccine mandates and race

“The number of hospitals and health systems requiring COVID-19 vaccination for employees is growing.”

And people are losing income over it — and maybe their jobs. Thousands of NY Health Care Workers Placed on Unpaid Leave, Face Firing Over Vaccine Mandate

Combine that with studies that show vaccine hesitancy is high among blacks — e.g., …

“This survey study of 10,871 HCWs [health care workers] from 2 academic hospitals found that, compared with White HCWs, vaccine hesitancy was increased nearly 5-fold among Black HCWs, 2-fold among Hispanic or Latino HCWs, and by nearly 50% among Asian HCWs and HCWs who were members of other racial/ethnic groups.” Source

And you get this.

Leader of Black Lives Matter New York chapter calls vaccine mandates “racist and disrespectful.”

I don’t believe vaccine mandates are racist, but they are according to the left’s playbook, which says that disproportionate outcomes = racism.

  1. I don’t care much for any of the playbooks that are in use, be they left or right. What jumps out at me, however, is the fact that African-Americans were subject to the most horrible deception and abuse in the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. I can certainly understand why people from that particular community would hesitate to act in accordance with a mandate from the government to get vaccinated. That said, people who are not vaccinated have no business working in healthcare facilities of any kind.

According to current research, it appears hesitancy rates are similar amongst blacks and whites…with whites being a percentage higher.

As well, when looking at raw numbers, according to current data tracking, as of September 21, 2021, white adults accounted for the largest share (60%) of unvaccinated adults. Yet with percentages, whites are more likely to have been vaccinated than blacks. The study speculates that other factors such as access may account for some differences.

The BLM NY chapter spokesman is quoted in the article you referenced as saying…. “It’s not gonna be white men in suits on Wall Street who are gonna get stopped. There’s such hypocrisy in this thing.”

That remains to be proven. Yet, given past experiences with racial profiling, discrimination and medical experimentation, it’s not unreasonable there would be concern about vaccine mandates and how they are administered and enforced.

That said, the rhetoric of this group is quite interesting. The chapter spokesperson said…

“We are not anti-vaxxers. Some of us are vaccinated. It’s an individual’s choice. No one should be forced to put something in their body….I think, in a perfect world, vaccine requirements should be business by business. But it could be a slippery slope, so the mandate should be removed completely.”

Hmm…where have I heard that type of rhetoric before??? Oh yes, that sounds very similar to conservative talking points on vaccine mandates.
