Gen. Milley’s coup

I’m sure you’ve heard the story. According to Bob Woodward (who I don’t trust), Gen. Milley tried to undermine civilian control of the military, and had very questionable backchannel conversations with the Chinese.

Sen. Marco Rubio has written a letter to President Biden saying Milley must be fired immediately.

Slow down, Senator.

Perhaps he should be put on leave immediately, but there needs to be an investigation. It’s not right to fire someone because of something Bob Woodward said.

      1. There was not at all enough time for that. And given the prevailing insanity of the VP and a good many GOP members, it is highly unlikely that it would have worked.

        1. * Your TDS continues to show.
          * Who says there wasn’t enough time for orderly, lawful methods? You’re just assuming that.
          * The time to question an unlawful or crazy order is when it happens. “I’m afraid my commander is going to do something crazy so I’m going to undermine the chain of command” is not right.
          * Undermining civilian control — and betraying our secrets to enemies — is never acceptable.

          1. This is what I mean by saying I don’t see how this ends well. I’ve no idea what Milley did, or didn’t do– I’d believe it of him, to be honest, but Woodward is a very unreliable source for anything.

But the fact that Robin is outright embracing a secret military coup (!) and that because of the “prevaling insanity of the VP and a good many GOP members” this seems reasonable to him suggests that there’s not much common ground to be found.

There’s a folk syndrome, chūnibyō, in Japanese where middle school students who want to feel important convince themselves that they have superpowers or secret abilities, so they can tell themselves a story in which they’re far more special than it otherwise seems they are.

Convincing yourself that you’re in such an exciting age that the usual standards don’t apply — the Trumpological suspension of the ethical! — feels sort of like the same roleplay to me. Everyone likes to feel they matter..

(I have to admit I’m past the point of taking this seriously.)

  1. I approve of back channels for communication. I think they might even be featured in some Tom Clancy books and it’s good to affirm to your enemy that you’re not crazy.

As for the rest, some legitimate investigation needs to be done.

    1. Right. There are things that generals and intelligence people and diplomats do on the regular that we don’t know about. That’s why there needs to be an investigation.

      1. Might be that in that meeting the General had, he was affirming the chain of command. Can the president just say “launch ’em all” and that’s all there is to it? Or, are there procedures that have to be followed? And is Milley part of the procedure and he was reminding them of that fact?

IDK. I have no problem with an investigation.
