Toby Keith’s sad new song

He seems to think America is over. The sad part is that he might be right.

  1. He could be on to something. Just recently we had a significant portion of the country believing American needed to be made great again. We had 17 state attorney generals and 106 Congressional leaders join a lawsuit that was found to have no standing by SCOTUS…with its efforts flying in the face of “states rights”…a long held, beloved US value. We had a public declaration by the former US president to “Liberate Michigan”, followed by an armed mob threatening local state officials and a plot to kidnap and kill the governor. We saw our former president deliver an address at a United Nations meeting and the world literally laughed at him. We’ve witnessed the changing of the rules of appointing SCOTUS nominees to fulfill a partisan political agenda. The national debt rose by almost $7.8 trillion during the past four years (under the leadership of those who were supposed to be fiscal hawks). We’ve seen partisan tribalism rise to a level in Congress that Job #1 for the party out of power is to obstruct, not public service. Most recently we even witnessed a mob storm the US Capitol Building, the symbol of democracy, allegedly with the intent of killing the US VP and Congressional leaders and halting the legitimate excise of government authority to certify a US presidential election. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Yeah, this guy may definitely be on to something!

  2. Under the grotesquely and nightmarishly lawless rule of Trump there was certainly reason to be pessimistic about the future of America. But there is reason for a degree of optimism. These raging lunatics who support him will not prevail.

    1. Indeed, there’s always a reason for optimism. Yet, a house divided against itself can’t stand. Trump may have amplified things but not the cause of it. The question is, will we choose to allow extreme tribalism to divide and destroy us or will we choose to listen to and learn from each other and earnestly try to form a more perfect union?

That said, even if America is over…some assume that would be a bad thing. Yet, could what follows be even better?

    1. It seems to me that most of the “news” sites have decided that the best way to keep viewers is to keep them in a constant state of anger / concern.

      1. I suppose that’s true. MSNBC is the flip side of that coin. All that the social media networks care about is “engagement”…so if they can scare or anger you into interaction, then they’re making advert dollars.

    1. Is something a “fundamental right” when it can be taken away if you commit a felony? I’m not sure. Maybe. I think felons can’t own guns, and that’s been ruled a fundamental right.
