Pedantic? Kind? When do you correct someone’s spelling?

When do you correct someone’s spelling in social media, or on a blog or bulletin board? Generally speaking, I’d say don’t do it. But what if a young woman posts for the first time on a public forum and asks everyone to “bare with her”?

  1. I only do it:

If it’s a friend who I know generally cares about getting things right but doesn’t mind a correction in a friendly/teasing spirit.

If someone is recommending some kind of specific resource but gets the spelling wrong, so that those trying to follow up don’t have a problem trying to find it.

A situation like yours would be tricky. If it was some person I had no connection with doing it publicly, I’d say she probably would have to learn the hard way because for whatever reason most people are only angered, not profited, by such attempts at correction no matter how politely done. If it was someone I knew, I’d probably do it by private communication.

In that case, I’d likely not address it. Despite it being incorrect, most get it…especially if the forum audience was youthful. They don’t seem to put much emphasis on things of that nature. *IF* I did anything, if feasible, I would addressed it privately.
