The pre- and post-Trump GOP

For good or ill, Donald Trump has changed the Republican Party. Pre-Trump candidates of the Bush, Romney, and McCain variety — people who want to be friends with the media, who want to compromise with Democrats, who uphold rather than challenge the Washington system, who are mortally afraid of being called racist or sexist — are no longer acceptable. The time is over for that kind of Republican.

Ron DeSantis is a post-Trump Republican. He doesn’t take any guff from the media. He doesn’t allow them to set the agenda with their questions on their terms. He fights against the establishment without apology.

What about Nikki Haley? Is she a pre- or a post-Trump Republican?

I haven’t followed her very carefully, and I hope she proves me wrong, but I have a strong feeling she’s more in the Bush, Romney, and McCain mold, and therefore won’t do at all.

If I’m right, I hope she’s not chosen as a box-checking VP candidate.

    1. How would a pre-Trump response to such an ignorant and sexist statement have looked different? Certainly the broadbrush “liberals are always” stuff is heavy-handed polemics, but Trump did not invent that kind of thing.

      1. QUOTE: Certainly the broadbrush “liberals are always” stuff is heavy-handed polemics…

It’s this type of content that makes it *appear* post-Trump…not because he invented it but because it’s very on-brand for him and his acolytes and *seems* to have made it a more acceptable from of political engagement.

QUOTE: How would a pre-Trump response to such an ignorant and sexist statement have looked different?

Interestingly, the words no sooner left Lemon’s mouth that I knew he’d get major blow back for that statement. In context, it appeared he was “trying” to say that Haley should be careful about saying others are out of their prime, when some might say she’s out her prime (according to Google’s colloquial parlance). It seemed he was trying to put a different spin on the expression…”people that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”. Yet, it didn’t land that way and became fodder more political folly. It would have been best if he hadn’t commented at all. Yet, if he was going to say something…simply leave it at…Haley needs to be careful about saying that others are out of their prime….period!

        1. Your second paragraph appears to be a response to the question I asked, and yet it contains absolutely no information or argument to that end. Help me out.

          1. A pre-Trump answer could be a number of things…one being… “I don’t want to dignify the comment with a response.”

          2. BTW…the commentary in my second paragraph was in response to your words “ignorant and sexist statement” . Your characterization reminded me of the thoughts I had when I initially heard Lemon’s commentary and suspected it would get such a reaction. Thanks for not disappointing.
