She was an amazing woman who lived a full and long life. Condolences to my friends who had the privilege to call her their queen.

Well said!
After such a life, however sad her death, you can’t really see it as tragic, but it’s still hitting me pretty hard. Over the last few weeks I’ve lost my favourite aunt (who at least I got to see before she passed) and now Her Majesty, so I’ll always associate them from now on. This puts them both in good company.
She could easily have lived an ordinary life and been happy — when you see pictures of the young Elizabeth working as a mechanic in the army, you can imagine who Elizabeth-the-commoner would have been — but she was born to a charge. She could have walked away, like her uncle, and still been rich beyond imagination, but she didn’t. She knew the Crown comes at a price, and she paid it, to the good of all her people.
I was proud to be her subject.
