We need to challenge the woke on “unity”

A side note in the Spotify / Rogan story is the use of the word “unity,” which came up in a few of the twitter comments.

What does the woke left mean when they say “unity”?

I think it’s something like this: All Americans should be united behind fundamental principles of fairness and decency, and we should exert public pressure on people who don’t conform to those standards.

That sounds about right because it’s both a genuinely good sentiment and completely useless without more information.

Where is this list of fundamental principles? Shouldn’t we all know what those principles are? Who adjudicates it? How much pressure is appropriate when?

Is free speech a fundamental principle of fairness? Is allowing a speaker to speak without interruption part of fundamental fairness and/or decency? Is it fair or decent to try to get a person fired because you disagree with him about who should swim in the women’s swimming events?

To me, this illustrates one of the main weaknesses of wokeness. They take a grade-school level platitude, that everyone should agree with, but then they import a hundred other assumptions they won’t be honest about.

It’s like Twitter or Facebook with their “community guidelines.”

Tech: “You’ve violated our community guidelines.”

Innocent person: “Really? Which ones? How did we violate them?”

Tech: “We determine that, you peasant. Shut up.”

“Unity” is one of those values that only makes sense in a certain context, within prescribed limits. There’s a lot of unity under a tyrannical dictatorship, but we don’t want that kind of unity.

Wokeness requires a shallowness of thinking that’s unworthy of a sixth grader — which is why it’s catching on. Nobody’s learning how to think any more. Or if they are, they’re allowing undisciplined sentiment to have the upper hand.

  1. It’s crazy out there, Adele is now a “hater”:

Adele criticized for saying she loves being a woman

It’s interesting about Rogan. I saw Eddie Griffin on a Starz special taped/released in 2007 (?) last weekend. He was new to me. I’m watching and he can barely say a sentence without saying “Nigger this…”, “Nigger that…”. Hey, I am just accurately quoting him. I guess he can get away with it because he’s black. I don’t know if it’s racist that blacks or whites are not allowed to use certain words, but the other group can… The rules are whites can’t say the N-word, but blacks can say “cracker.”

Anyways, he was speaking at some Black business group, and during the middle of the show they shut him down because of his use of “Nigger”. I was wondering if they had ever seen his act? And, why was he booked? It was their event, and they paid him his full amount, so they can terminate his performance if they want. ISTM that you wouldn’t book the guy if you have a policy about not using certain words.

Eddie is also rabid anti-COVID vaccine. Rabid. It’s not like Rogan where Rogan talks to MDs about the vaccine. (Maybe MDs on the fringe, but MDs nonethless) So Eddie is on YouTube telling people not to take the vaccine and he says “Nigger” all the time. Is he cancelled? What do you think?

I don’t want Eddie cancelled too. He’s funny. If you don’t like that language, don’t watch him. But, it’s BS that they’re trying to cancel Rogan.

    1. You should have published that one under the name “Rachel Dolezal” just to make things even more confusing. 🙂

      1. I was listening to someone who noted, that if some Trans “woman” dresses ultra-feminine then “she” is lauded for embracing her”identity”. But, often if a woman dresses ultra-feminine then she’s blasted as being a traitor or a tart. (Ultra-feminine would be wearing curve enhancing/hugging clothing, showing cleavage, wearing high heels, lots of makeup, big hair, etc.)

        1. Trying to apply any sort of logic to this stuff is like trying to make sense of Yes lyrics. Madness lies that way.

  2. QUOTE: Wokeness requires a shallowness of thinking that’s unworthy of a sixth grader — which is why it’s catching on. Nobody’s learning how to think any more. Or if they are, they’re allowing undisciplined sentiment to have the upper hand.

According to several sources, wokeness means to be aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice). It’s being aware or well informed in a political or cultural sense, especially regarding issues surrounding marginalized communities. As I can see, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. ISTM, as with other social issues, kept to its intended purpose, it could be beneficial. Yet, when pushed to extremes it can wreak havoc and lead to ridiculous outcomes like when a school principal is forced to recognize a minor boy as a girl and allow them to use the same bathroom as a “cis” girl…whatever “cis” is suppose to mean.

QUOTE: We need to challenge the woke on “unity”.

Indeed we should…to ensure that it’s defined and managed properly. Yet…”who are the woke”? As I see, the extremes of wokeness are prevalent on all sides of social and political continuums. As well, how do we go about challenging the extremes of wokeness…no matter where it shows up within society…whether that be within the liberal left or the alt-right?
