I’ve never been all that taken with computer games. As a kid, I liked pong and battle tanks. In college, I liked Archon, and Mrs. Crowhill and I wasted a lot of time on Bard’s Tale, which was a lot of fun. Later I enjoyed an Apache helicopter simulator on my Commodore 128. I also enjoy Age of Empires every once in a great while.
But I think my favorite computer game is Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64. That was a lot of fun, and I played it a lot with the kids.
Do you have a favorite video game?
Don’t have a current favorite but back in college days my wife and I use to love Ms. Pac-Man. I think we spent a small fortune in quarters. ;-). Once was into Angry Birds. These days, time permitting, I dabble a bit with Spider Solitaire.
I was more into text adventures (big Infocom fan, back in the day) and then story-like games like the Ultima series and the Sierra games than traditional arcade games. Mostly ’cause my game reflexes weren’t great, and sadly it hasn’t improved over the years.
These days I don’t seem to have the time, although I should probably get back into them: exploration games of the sort I’d probably enjoy — often disparaged as “walking simulators” — have a sizeable niche these days.
During the pandemic I’ve taken up chess again, for the first time since I was a kid. I’m still terrible at actual games because I’m too lazy to learn opening theory, but my puzzle solving has vastly improved.
