  1. QUOTE: It is disingenuous for the bishops to say this attempt to change the rules regarding the Eucharist is nonpolitical. Catholics, cradle and convert alike, know the rules are often broken. All Catholics have seen someone who wasn’t Catholic come up to the Communion rail, receive the Eucharist and walk off, unscathed. Plenty of divorced Catholics continue to take Communion as well, as do more secret sinners — with transgressions both large and small. This is a new front in the culture war, plain and simple.

    It is indeed a misrepresentation of the Christian church to allege its standards are based on a political agenda rather than scriptural principles and/or dogma. Yet, given the church has not always consistently held itself to its standards, I could see why the author questioned its motives relative to politics and Biden. For instance, scripture describes a lying tongue as detestable to God. (Proverbs 6:16-17) Our previous president had a VERY strained relationship with the truth (allegedly told over 30,500 false or misleading statements during his presidency). Yet, many church leaders didn’t hold him accountable on this standard.

    For me, the article didn’t come off as being authored by someone who was uninformed about religion but more so questioning the motives of the church and if its being consistent with its standards.

    1. Also the previous president’s persistent mishandling of the Covid crisis exhibits a horrible disregard for human life. There have been a few religious folks in public who expressed outrage about this, but not nearly enough.
