I actually knew what Juneteenth was, but I found this refreshing.
Juneteenth — the annual observance celebrating the end of slavery in the United States in 1865 — is a holiday that many Americans haven’t heard of until recently. That has caused some to wonder if it’s just some new “woke” holiday invented by Marxist academics, the creators of the historically inaccurate 1619 Project, or some other group on the left.
I’m sure that is exactly what a lot of people are wondering, and with good cause. There’s so much nonsense being spoken and spread, it’s likely to make people suspicious of anything they haven’t heard of before.
“Is this yet another bit of nonsense from BLM or the 1619 people?”
No, it’s a legit holiday, and maybe it should be a national one. We need to remember our sins, but we also need to remember that we’re improving.
Seems “she” doesn’t get it… https://twitter.com/RealCandaceO/status/1405613988637986816
She says that she will be celebrating the 4th of July “alone” and that she is an American, as if an American cannot celebrate BOTH Juneteenth and the 4th. She most definitely doesn’t get it.
It’s getting so I can write a script for this place.
Greg: writes post.
William: look over there, someone this post wasn’t even about said/did something stupid!
Robin: same, but snarkier.
That’s about 50% of the comments right there.
Pentamom: Aren’t you forgetting your contribution?
Pentamom: You go Greg!
Probably. It doesn’t really bother me to be characterized as frequently agreeing with a blogger I choose to follow.
And it doesn’t bother me to be characterized as frequently contributing snarky criticisms of snarky comments.
Probably?…it appears it was a total omission. That said, you might not be bothered by such a characterization. Yet, whether that characterization is fully descriptive could be at question.
As I was replying to Robin, my “probably” was in reference not to the fact of my omission, but to his comment. I meant that it’s probably a reasonable representation of the majority of my fairly infrequent comments.
Probably or probably not…depending on who’s making the assessment.
It looks highly probable to me, but I guess that goes without saying.
Did anybody you know get the holiday off? I didn’t hear of anyone. Even asked my old co-worker who didn’t get laid off from our Silicon Valley woke-est of the woke tech company and they didn’t get it off. Probably will next year. I told him if they don’t, he could probably shame them somehow to get the day off.
Went to a burger joint (Steak n Shake) on Friday night. Or Saturday? It is evidently near a ball diamond and there appeared to be some tournament going on. Got to see some little league teams come in and eat. Teams I saw had a mix of players–not monochrome. Better than it was 50 years ago. I think it is true that 1) we need to improve, 2) it is better than it used to be.
Yes, I know people at one association and one tech company that got the day off.
Since I am not currently living in the US, I can’t say off hand whether anyone there got the day off. I could ask a family member about that, but they have all gone of the rails of sanity into unbridled Trumpism and most likely see Juneteenth as a leftist thing. I have seen that on Facebook. On the timeline of an account called “Cincinnati Then and Know” there was a meme calling for a celebration of Juneteenth which provoked some outrage. Most of that outrage (congruent with votes from 14 Republican congress members) got deleted, as it was offensive. The same thing happened with regard to LGBT month.
