Arrest violent pro-Trump demonstrators

I’m reading reports that Trump supporters have torn down metal security barricades at the bottom of the Capitol steps and have skirmished with police.

I sympathize with anyone who wants an open and public investigation into allegations the election was stolen. I am not convinced there was enough fraud to change the results, but I also reject out of hand the claim that there is “no evidence,” or that “the courts have already vetted these allegations.” Both claims are false. Whether the allegations of cheating have merit or not, there is no question there has been a conspiracy of silence and cover-up about the allegations, and that is bad for the country. There needs to be a fair, public and honest investigation.

These people do have a right peaceably to assemble and petition the government. But when protests get out of hand, the police need to intervene.

It’s a dead certainty that the media will magnify the threat of pro-Trump demonstrators, just as they minimize the threat of leftwing demonstrators, so don’t believe everything you hear. But as a matter of principle, protests that become violent need to be shut down and people need to go to jail.

  1. I never saw any leftwingers violently storm into the very Capitol itself. Ivanka even called them patriots. Her father doesn’t seem responsive. These are apparently the people who have been “standing by.” Just imagine the fury we would hear against them if they were Muslims, or if they were BLM. Plainly these people are hostile to the USA and the very opposite of patriots.

        1. Depends on what you mean by “these people.” The tenor of your post seems to be painting with a broad brush.

The ones who are peaceably protesting — the majority — are simply protestors. Those who are committing violence are criminals who should be locked up. Beyond that I’m not willing to say much until some time elapses and we get some actual reporting.

If they were reported to be Muslims, or BLM, we would wait to see if that was really true. Initial reports are almost always wrong.

          1. Trump was eager to wipe out Antifa in Portland by military means, and yet he expresses boundless sympathy for his violent supporters. He “loves” them. There is little doubt that BLM storming buildings of the federal government would have felt the full force of his wrath.

            1. Except that your speculation is wrong. Antifa and BLM did attack a federal building in Portland in July and did not feel the full force of anybody’s wrath.

              1. There is no comparison between a federal building in Portland and the capitol building in Washington DC. At least Trump talked tough in the Portland situation, but we didn’t hear a peep out of him until late in the game during the assault from his comparison. And when he finally told his supporters to go home, after considerable damage was done, he spoke of them in the most affectionate terms. This is not not about left vs. right. That is a mere smoke screen to cover up this man’s contempt for the USA.

              2. I agree there are gradations in the seriousness of an assault. Burning down a shoe store is not as serious (from a societal point of view) as burning down a police station, which is not as serious as burning down a federal building, which is not as serious as attacking the Capitol. And as I’ve said before, I have no sympathy for anyone who does any of these things, no matter the cause.

I was replying to the incorrect assertions in your comment.

  2. On the bright side, all it takes for the Left to admit that public violence is bad is to have it turned against their power. Not against the people they claim to support, of course — it takes determined effort not to notice that urban riots don’t affect billionaires much, but do affect the poor who live in communities they can’t escape — but against their power. They don’t think their power is affected by stores being looted, so eh, who cares?

Since I think all this violence is unjustified, I’m happy (well, “happy”) to see everyone involved imprisoned on all sides. Back in university there were riots where a bunch of protestors tried to break into the provincial parliament IIRC, and I supported cracking down hard, and I see no reason to change my views here.

Somehow I suspect the riot won’t be reported as a “mostly peaceful” protest..

    1. The right will condemn the violence quickly, in sharp contrast to how the left treated “their” violence.

The left’s claim that they “support” the poor has been obviously false for years. That they continue to get away with it is very telling.

  3. My best friend from my early 20’s on the Tw:

Jan 6: When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for WE THE PEOPLE to occupy the capitol building that BELONGS TO US, we shall occupy

Jan 7: Take heart, lovers, you are not abandoned. Grasp God’s hand, let the Spirit rekindle the Gospel of Jesus Christ inside you, and take your place beside your brothers and sisters in this worthy fight. The victory will be accomplished, not in our time but his.

Jan 7: To those berating Trump, his supporters and the “damage” they’ve done to the republic, let me ask you a question. If it turns out there was cheating that flipped the election, will you change your mind?

An hour ago: America has become Hong Kong

The first one is still up after 2 days–and five people dying including a police officer.

Makes me sad. On his profile his only bio is “Catholic.” Makes me sad because he somehow equates the gospel to the Republican party (non-RINO version of course) and Trump being re-elected/ruling. I spent a night at his house 4 years ago as I was passing through Indiana. Initially it was good to see him and he was hospitable, but then he kept going on and on about “liberals.” Remember him telling his 13-14 yo son “You got to watch out for liberals. They are everywhere.” I thought, “If you only knew…”

6 months or a year and a half later he gets “concerned” about my Tweets not being conservative enough. He stopped following me. I didn’t stop following him. Who’s the snowflake? It was just weird. Instead of discussing things, he wanted me to read books. So I say a paragraph or 5 and his response is “read Dinesh D’Souza’s book…” …as if that guy ever told the truth.
