I will probably wait to get it.
I’ve never had a flu shot, and I haven’t had the flu since I was a kid, so I’m not particularly worried about the virus.
Yes, I know this virus is different, and yes, I know that getting the vaccine is not only for me. It’s for protecting other people. So if the thing turns out to be safe, I’ll get it — for other peoples’ sake. But I won’t be an early adopter.
I think that’s where I am with it. I’m not anti-vax by any stretch, but I think there are reasonable questions to ask about some of the vaccines that are out there. And this one is being pushed *awfully* fast. I don’t believe there’s likely to be a malicious disregard for safety, but there does seem to be a lot of room for error in the process.
And it doesn’t have to be error or malice. They can do everything according to procedures as well as they can with the purest of motives and still miss something crucial.
As Thomas Sowell says, there are no answers, only trade offs. I feel I am at little risk of this virus, so I’m less likely to step forward early to get the vaccine. Someone who is at greater risk from the virus might make a different calculation.
If Thomas Sowell says it, it’s gotta be true. There’s no way I am going to become autistic just to avoid getting the plague.
Yeah, I guess I was including “the limits of human fallibility” more broadly in “error.” I didn’t just mean “royal screw up.” Additional time will never eliminate human fallibility anyway, but it allows for more redundancy in procedure and more time for things not immediately apparent, to be noticed.
And yes, my (as far as I know) relatively low risk for a severe case is part of my calculation as well.
Touche!
