Is the NYT using bullying tactics or Tucker Carlson?
First, if Tucker’s version of this story is accurate then it’s awful and I’d suggest he take whatever legal recourse that’s at this disposal. As well, the NYT should make a public apology and assume responsibility for any negative backlash that comes their way.
That said, given Carlson’s track record of “spin”, I can’t say that I trust his version without evidence to verify his claims. He offered none in his monologue…just an accusation. I guess we’d have to wait to see if the NYT publishes a story and if so if it contains his address.
Furthermore, I question if Tucker indirectly caused what he’s accused the NYTs of doing. He made a public with an unsubstantiated allegation against the NYT. As well, he ascribed unsubstantiated negative motives for the story. He then somewhat linked those allegations to previous reckless activities of an unnamed “left-wing journalist” and the harassment and vandalism that followed. Those who didn’t listen carefully could “assume” the NYT was the previous guilty party. Also, Carlson revealed the names of the journalist and photographer that were alleged to have been involved in this story. By doing this couldn’t the NYT now make a claim that Carlson intended to do the very same thing that he accused them of doing? After all, once he exposed these individuals, within hours, conservative Twitter accounts started publicly posting the address and personal information of the reporter. Many encouraged people to harass the reporter.
So, will Tucker take responsibility for any harm that comes to this reporter and his family? How is his behavior any better than what he alleged the NYT was “intending” to do to him? Incidentally, the NYT made this statement, “While we do not confirm what may or may not publish in future editions, the Times has not and does not plan to expose any residence of Tucker Carlson’s, which Carlson was aware of before tonight’s broadcast.” .
I wonder if this allegation was made by Carlson as a way to deflect from recent scandals. Last week, there was a story about his head writer who “resigned” for what Fox executives described as horrific racist, misogynistic, and homophobic behavior. Also, there was a lawsuit filed this week accusing Tucker, Sean Hannity and other prominent Fox News personalities of sexual misconduct. I don’t know if that’s true but given the track record of other former Fox personalities, it wouldn’t be far-fetched. Could it be the NYT was doing a story on these issues? If so, wouldn’t that be within the bounds of legitimate journalism?
As of today, what we have is an unsubstantiated allegation of intended misconduct against the NYT. As well, we have actual in-kind misconduct based on the actions of Tucker Carlson and his supporters. So, it causes me to wonder, who’s the “actual” bully…especially if the NYT’s statement is accurate that Carlson knew before his broadcast they had no intent of publishing a story containing his address.
Yes, Tucker was doing the same thing to the NYT that he claimed they were doing to him, by exposing the name of the reporter and photographer. I think that was his point. It was a shot across the bow of the NYT. “Before you unleash your minions, realize I can unleash mine.”

I agree that was his likely intent. Yet, what makes his actions any better, since he decried the “alleged” actions of the NYT? Wouldn’t it have been more “responsible” journalism for him to present evidence to the audience if he was going to unleash his minions? Should Tucker be held accountable if something bad happens to this journalist and his family? He seemed to want the audience to feel sympathy for the plight of his family when it happened to him.
That said, if the NYT is a unscrupulous as he alleges, then it would be nothing for them to not publish anything and play the victim (like Carlson and others tends to do). His little stunt could easily backfire…especially if harm comes to the reporter and it can be demonstrated that he did nothing inappropriate.
He clearly feels like the victim. They (although, as you point out, not necessary the NYT in the first case) came after him, and he feels as if he has to protect his family, so he’s issuing a warning. If his story is accurate, it is the NYT this time.
What would you do if you feared the NYT was going to provoke a mob to come after your family?
I think it was a mistake for Tucker to reveal the name of the reporter and the photographer, because what he’s already done may have put them at risk. I think he should have threatened to do so. I suspect that would have been enough.
But it’s scary that both sides seem to have locked and loaded maniacs who are ready to go out and wreak havok.

That’s just it, there’s no evidence that the NYT did anything inappropriate. Carlson went as far as to allege a motive of malfeasance…claiming they wanted to shut him down. If he was going to report this story, knowing it would likely unleash his minions, he should have given his audience concrete evidence to confirm his allegations. To do it in this manner, doesn’t make him any better than the alleged misconduct of the NYT. As they say, two wrongs never make a right.
As of now, here’s the hard, cold facts…all we have is Tucker’s unsubstantiated allegations. Yet, we have ACTUAL evidence of bullying towards the NYT’s reporter, per Tucker’s and his supporter’s actions. I’d say the NYT has some credibility given they have yet to do anything that’s had a negative impact on Carlson or his family. As well, they’ve released a statement indicating that Carlson KNEW they were not going to do a story which contained personal information BEFORE his broadcast.
That said, if the NYT doesn’t release the alleged personal information and something bad happens to the reporter and his family…it will be Carlson who will be the villain in this story, if he cannot produce evidence to substantiate his allegations.
I certainly wouldn’t take Carlson’s word for it. He needs to produce some evidence. It looks like Fox is getting ready to do some shape-shifting.
I would “like” to believe Tucker without evidence. Yet, I’ve seen enough that makes me question anything that comes from any of the “Opinion Klan”. Ironically, he’s doing the very behavior he’s decrying. But, I guess it’s right for him and wrong for the NYT, eh?
So, if something doesn’t come out over the weekend, I’m wondering if Tucker will give an update and apologize for putting the journalist and photographer at risk. Seems that would be responsible journalism and a decent thing to do. We’ll see.
Could be that his pre-emotive attack stopped the story. We’ll never know unless someone at the NYT says, “yeah, we were working on a story…”
He already had to move once. I imagine if it happened to me I’d be extra careful. Idk. I don’t like the guy…think he’s an a-hole, but people bugging him at his house is ridiculous.
I agree it was a preemptive strike and empathize with him. Yet, he could have done this without putting the name of the journalist and photographer out there. By doing it this way, he’s guilty of the very thing he’s accused them of doing.
The NYT hasn’t put out the “alleged” story and have publicly denied planning it…indicating Tucker knew this before his announcement. So, we don’t know who’s telling the truth. Yet, what we do know is by Tucker’s actions he’s incited the attack dogs on the journalist. At the very least, since the alleged story hasn’t come out, he should update his audience and ask them not to go after the journalist. As the expression goes, “be the change you want to see in the world”.
I am not convinced that it is preemptive. It seems to me that the NYT would not have been intimidated by Carlson. If they were going to dox someone what difference would it make to them that the person to be doxed told the public about it in advance? Doxing as such as a disgraceful thing to do before or after the fact. Carlson is not at all credible about all of this unless comes forth with evidence.

I keep wondering, what would be the purpose of the NYT revealing his address? I could see them doing a story about his recent scandals, but why a story about where he lives? As for Tucker, why not threaten the NYT privately with legal action if they took such action? Why not mention the allegation publicly without revealing the names of the reporter and photographer? I got the distinct impression his allegation was designed to get his audience genned up. As well, shift sympathy his way if the NYT came out with story relative to his current scandals.
That said, given there hasn’t been anything published by the NYT (to date), he needs to call off his goons. Isn’t that what a responsible journalist should do after they’ve acted irresponsibly? As it stands currently, it appears as if he’s the bully.

Well, it’s Friday and the story Tucker alleged hasn’t been published by the NYT to date. PolitFact did a fact check and found the allegation false (referencing 7 sources). https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/jul/22/facebook-posts/new-york-times-hasnt-published-tucker-carlsons-add/
