Okay, solar energy, do your thing

by Greg Krehbiel on 28 September 2017

From the news reports I’ve heard, Puerto Rico’s energy infrastructure is a disaster and large parts of it need to be rebuilt.

What a perfect time to transition the island to clean, righteous, wonderful, cheap solar power! They get plenty of sunlight in Puerto Rico, so … what’s the problem?

The problem is that solar power only really works when it’s parasitic on a working (i.e., non-solar) energy grid and supported by government subsidies.

At least that’s what all us retrograde doubters think. But … now’s the chance to prove us wrong. How often do you get an opportunity to rebuild substantial parts of an energy system, in such a perfect location? So, solar, do your thing and prove you’re ready for prime time.

Although slightly different than what you’ve proposed, in a recent interview, the mayor of San Juan proposed replacing equipment like street lights with solar powered equipment in its effort to rebuild and improve the island’s functioning.
