It’s not just carbon, folks

by Greg Krehbiel on 9 August 2017

Dave sent this along: Send This Story to Everyone You Know Who Drives an Electric Car. It links to a Daily Mail article with this subhead.

Child miners aged four living a hell on Earth so YOU can drive an electric car: Awful human cost in squalid Congo cobalt mine that Michael Gove didn’t consider in his ‘clean’ energy crusade

The anti-CO2 craze has distracted people from a lot of the other environmental and trade issues associated with alternative energy and so-called “green” initiatives. The article linked above talks about the need for cobalt, but there are serious issues with access to rare earth elements as well. Search for “rare earth elements required for batteries” to see what I mean.

Also, all those environmentalists out there should consider:
    1) Batteries for electric cars wear out. Since they contain rare earth elements, the discarded batteries and will need to be disposed of as hazardous waste.
    2) Powering the electric cars will require new sources of electric energy. Generating that energy will require new fossil fuel power plants – which will produce just as much CO2 as the gas-fueled cars the electric cars were designed to replace.
    3) Powering the electric cars will require vast new additions to the power grid, like charging stations and new power lines. Building, using and maintaining that new infrastructure will place additional stress on the environment.

My cousin drives a Tesla. That he lives in Nor Cal and has Congo coal is a fucking joke.

SM, it’s cobalt from the Congo, not coal.
