Manafort, Russia, Mueller and the swamp

by Greg Krehbiel on 30 October 2017

I have very mixed feelings about this Russia investigation.

My basic political conviction is that nobody can be trusted with power, so limited amounts of power should be widely distributed, and everybody who’s given power should be held to account. That would seem to argue in favor of special counsels and investigations, but only if the process can be trusted. I’m not sure it can be.

I have no significant money or investments, my taxes are pretty simple, and I live a pretty boring and ordinary life, but I would imagine that a team of FBI investigators could indict me on something. IOW, there’s abuse of power on the investigator’s side of things as well.

And that abuse of power goes both ways — railroading or exonerating people for political reasons.

The Russia investigation has seemed like a witch hunt from the start. But … there may well be witches. Politics attracts ruthless, power-hungry, greedy people, and sometimes it transforms decent, ordinary people into ruthless, power-hungry, greedy people. Power corrupts, whether you have it or only want it. And the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil.

There have been far too many stories recently about corruption in the system, and while I would like to trust that justice will be done, I don’t think I can trust that.

It seems that we have a swamp filled with loathsome swamp creatures, and I’m not sure the justice system isn’t part of it. I’m very sad to say that. I would like to believe in the integrity of the FBI and the courts, but … I just don’t.

Somewhat along these lines, see this: Morgan Freeman: ‘Jailing Hillary’ Best Way To ‘Restore Public Faith In Govt’ (Not that we should take political advice from actors, but I think he is expressing a common sentiment.)

I get the impression that these Manafort charges involve real money laundering, not just some appearance of impropriety because he talked with the Russians. Looks like the Clintons committed similar but far worse crimes in their Uranium-One dealings, but I don’t expect to see any action taken against them.

Manafort way well be a crook. I don’t know. But I think your suspicion is right. There’s one justice system for the Manaforts of the world, but another for the Clintons.

Yeah, Manafort is just a slithery little swamp toad.
Bill, Hillary (and others like them) are the big ‘ole Swamp Monsters the FBI should be tracking down.

Man, the Clintonistas must have one hell of a thick “gotcha book” to never get touched. They’re making all the mafia Dons look like pikers.
