The end of the Boy Scouts?

by Greg Krehbiel on 12 October 2017

The Boy Scouts (sic) has decided to admit girls. Is that only girls who identify as boys, or ….

I was only a Boy Scout for a short time, and I’m no expert, but this seems like their death spiral just entered into a sharp downward phase.

Boys don’t want to be in a club with girls. That’s called school.

I saw an interview with the head of Boy Scouts (BS) and he couldn’t give one coherent reason for this change…other than parents desire this type of flexibility. I wonder how much of a true demand that was? It’s speculated the BS were losing money and this was an effort to increase revenue. I still find it curious they’ve gone forward with this despite public opposition from the leader of the Girl Scouts (GS). What could a girl get from the BS that they couldn’t get from the GS (other than a boyfriend)? As well, which side of this issue will feminists support? This is a confusing mess…what’s a girl to do?

Becoming an Eagle Scout. There is an equivalent on the GS side, but I don’t think it is as well known or highly respected.

But the solution is not to put girls in the BS, but to work on making the GS version better / more impressive.

True. Yet, I suspect if it was “just” about the Eagle Scout status, they could have worked out something else. I may be wrong, but my Spidey sense tells me this was likely about “the money”… to do something so major that it fundamentally changes the organization (and taking the heat that comes with it).

I think the Boy Scouts probably have a lot more benefactors that keep them functionally afloat. They have some fantastic facilities like Philmont that was donated by the Phillips petroleum magnate.

I think the Girl Scouts are way more dependent on things like the cookie sales. So GSA corporate is probably very worried about losing their slave labor.

    It’s idiotic.

Why would they do this? Most likely because they are threatened with a lawsuit by social justice warriors, and are trying to maintain their tax-exempt status.

I would personally like to see the end of tax exempt status. It empowers too much government meddling.

My wife and I are currently talking about (and likely will be) pulling my boys from Boy Scouts. This is the last straw of an organization that lost its soul about a decade ago.

We’ve reached a period in society where the term boy or man no longer exclusively means male. Who knew??? This tree was planted a while back and we now see its confusing fruit in full bloom. Just a couple of years ago the sports world awarded a man for “courage” because he decided to become and dress as a woman. Despite desiring this enough to go through sex reassignment surgery, said person still celebrates Father’s Day. To add to the fun, we now have parents who advocate for their pre-adolescent boys who “feel” they are girls and petition schools to change their bathroom rules (and winning in court) to accommodate them. These parents say it’s the child’s decision and their role is to be supportive and allow their little boys to dress and present themselves as girls.

Given this context, the latest move by Boy Scouts shouldn’t be a surprise. I’m wondering what they will call a young girl who is now a Boy Scout? Are they a Boy Scout, a female Boy Scout or a Girl Scout that is a member of Boy Scouts (not to be confused with members of Girl Scouts)? Or, will sex be taken out of the title altogether and they will just be known as scouts (in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts organizations). Lastly, with this change, isn’t one of these two scouting organizations now unnecessary?
