When we have an electronic security fence on the southern border …

by Greg Krehbiel on 31 January 2018

… can Trump claim that his “wall” was built?

Back in 2015, before the presidential primaries began, a voter asked candidate Donald Trump if he believed compromise should be part of politics.

“Compromise is not a bad word to me,” Trump answered. “But if you are going to compromise, ask for about three times more than you want. You understand? So when you compromise, you get what you want.”

Is a huge, beautiful wall, with a great big golden door in the middle, paid for by Mexico, “three times more” than what Trump really wants?

If Congress settles on enhanced electronic security, with cameras, drones, and so on, with a lot more border agents (which makes more sense than a wall, IMO), will that be what Trump wanted in the first place? And would we have ever gotten to that point if Trump hadn’t asked for this crazy wall?

Seems there was interest, investment and some action taken on such things prior to Trump’s wall proposal.

Yeah, but it was never finished. They’ve built little bits of wall and such here and there, but they haven’t been serious about it, IMO.

Per your commentary, the point was that investments and improvements were made (using a “lot more border agents” and other measures) and that point was reached prior to Trump asking for the wall.

He’s mostly speaking to the considerable part of his base who hate brown people. He’ll decry having illegal aliens working while his projects have had illegal workers. He’ll rail against the immoral shenanigans of Bill Clinton while he himself …

@Smitemouth: personally, I see and hear a lot more Intolerance and hate coming from the left.

You have the nerve to disagree with my policy preferences = the new racism.

I agree with Greg that a physical wall doesn’t make as much sense as some of the other border security enhancements that have traditionally enjoyed bipartisan support. But there is absloutely nothing racist in the support of a wall. At least nothing that wasn’t also present in the traditional bipartisan support for technological based fencing.

In this case it’s likely not racism….possibly demagoguery.
