Hitchens on Maj. Hasan

by Greg Krehbiel on 17 November 2009

Christopher Hitchens is a brave man.

While liberals in the media show their bravery by insulting Evangelicals and Catholics (known around the world for their vicious, blood-thirsty attacks), Hitchens is actually willing to speak the truth about the “religion of peace.”

I love when Hitchens takes on Islam. I understand the caution on the first day to say, “Don’t jump to conclusions just because he has an Arabic-sounding name.” Are there still people who reject that extreme Islamic beliefs are at the core of this attack? Sure he’s probably unstable and filled with “self-righteousness, self-pity, and self-hatred.” But that only resulted in death when you add a violent Jihadist theology to the mix.

And just how extreme are those beliefs? How many interviews of leaders of local mosques have you seen since 9-11 where they condemn such attacks as un-Islamic and inconsistent with the Koran? All I see are non-Muslim politicians, professors and liberal pundits making that case for them.

The only Muslims I see work for advocacy groups that admonish others for stereotyping and portray themselves as the victims.

Yes, if Islam really is the religion of peace, and if these guys are out of the mainstream, why don’t we have a continuous parade of Moslem clerics denouncing these things?

Jonah Goldberg’s column from last week really nailed it, esp. this line:

“We have a real problem when much of the political and journalistic establishment is eager to jump to the conclusion that peaceful political opponents are in league with violent extremists, but is terrified to consider the possibility that violent extremists really are violent extremists if doing so means calling attention to the fact that they are Muslims.”

It is quite interesting. They’re quick to think that Rush is inciting hatred and violence, but they’re reluctant to believe that people who actually preach and advocate violence are a threat. Very very weird.
