This whole “like the common man” thing is pretty weird.
We expect politicians to wear suits. Most people in America don’t wear suits. (Not even in business anymore.)
I don’t think a politician could do very well if he went around in Dockers and a plaid shirt.
So we expect them to be a cut above the hoi polloi.
OTOH, we don’t want elitists because we have a justified fear of ivory-towered idiots with grand theories.
So it seems that what we really want is somebody with working class roots who made it into the big league but still kept a lot of those working class sensibilities.
