The Children of Hurin

by Greg Krehbiel on 13 January 2008

Christopher Tolkien recently released a “new” book-length Tolkien story, The Children of Hurin. Some of the news stories about it seemed to want to ride on the success of The Lord of the Rings, as if this was a hidden masterpiece, recently discovered.

I it. It’s not really new. It’s just a longer version of the tale of Turin that’s found in the Silmarilion.

It’s a sad tale of a man who lives with a dark cloud over his life, but it’s worth reading — so long as you keep your expectations low. If you think it’s going to be as fun as The Hobbit or as engrossing as The Lord of the Rings, you’ll be disappointed. Think of it as an upgrade to the Silmarilion.

I read it when it came out and it is no doubt Christopher able managed to carry out his father’s original story. Though the story has certainly more Pagan characteristics than Christian ones. There is a genuine pre-Christian sadness to the story.
