"Tourtelot said that while some of the band’s past stunts have been done for shock or entertainment value, some sort of symbolism and self-expression was always at the root."

Not too sure what grinding up live rats and selling tickets to watch a desperate person commit suicide may be expressing…eh…maybe Tourtelot should just wear a t-shirt that reads, "I’m a Philistine!"

The sad thing is that the Philistines were actually quite cultured. Maybe we’re heading that way — toward a very cultured culture of death.

"Letting" their children. I don’t know how accurate my impressions are, since I don’t actually associate with any people who think this way, but at least based on what I read and hear in the media, parents have pretty much abandoned the idea that they "let" or "don’t let" their kids over 18 months old do *anything.* They just "try to instill good values" and "hope they make good choices" and wring their hands a lot.

If that’s true, stuff like this is inevitable. But I tend to share the opinion on this that I heard voiced the other day: no such thing is going to happen and nobody really means for it to happen. It’s all just a publicity stunt. Of course, it’s still a very, very bad thing that positive publicity can be garnered among certain segments of the population by such a stunt.

Jane — I think you’re right. It’s only us Neanderthals who think parents have authority over their children.
