Jimmy Akin on Fr. Maciel

by Greg Krehbiel on 21 May 2006

I think Jimmy Akin’s comments on the Fr. Maciel matter are right on target, although I would clarify that any “question mark” over the allegations only pertains to which of the many charges are true. There is no reasonable doubt that he is seriously guilty of gross misconduct and that at least some of the charges were true. There is no other reasonable way to interpret the Vatican’s action.

Now we have to wonder …

+ Will Fr. Neuhaus apologize for his bold assurances that Fr. Maciel was innocent? (So far his comments aren’t very impressive.)
+ Will the Legion and Regnum Christi apologize to the accusers, whom they have attacked and maligned?

+ Will the Legion and Regnum Christi reform and find a way to carry on their work without reference to Fr. Maciel? (For example, will they take down his pictures and otherwise quit the hero worship, quit quoting him all the time, etc.) They always say that they follow in the charism and style of their founder. What will they do now?
