This is not Afghanistan!

by Greg Krehbiel on 4 June 2014

I was glad when the NRA made a negative statement about open carry demonstrations in Texas where people walk around in public with long guns. Unfortunately, now they’re retracting it.

I grew up around guns. I am not afraid of guns. But even I feel a little weird when I see the cops with M16-like rifles at Union Station. It’s disconcerting.

When you see pictures of people walking around with long guns — openly displayed — it’s usually not a good thing.

The point these guys are trying to make is that you can carry around a gun and not be a threat, you can carry around gun and just be another citizen. In theory, they’re correct, but even people fairly comfortable with guns aren’t necessarily going to think that it’s smart to carry them around like that, for the reason you give and for other reasons, and people who think that guns are Inherently Scary Objects are not going to benefit from ad hoc amateur exposure therapy. So while I’m not frightened by the people advocating this as some people seem to be, I think it’s pretty dumb.
