The dog ate my receipts

by Greg Krehbiel on 17 June 2014

I think Republicans should propose a new bill — the Lois Lerner Sets the Bar bill, or something like that — that allows taxpayers to use whatever excuses the White House and the IRS use to cover up the Lois Lerner mess.

Or maybe it should be a little broader. Whenever a government official gets away with something, regular citizens are automatically issued an exemption. So when the Director of National Intelligence lies under oath to Congress, every American should be able to lie under oath. And when the president can simply ignore statutory deadlines, every American should be able to ignore them as well.

I’ve considered similar rules in the past: “good-for-the-gander” laws, making sure that whatever onerous rules our leaders establish they have to live by.

The U.S. Congress exempts itself from the human resources rules it imposes on the rest of the country.

Sometimes I think King George was a push over compared to the stuff we tolerate from our government.
