Getting out of the bad news trap

by Greg Krehbiel on 31 January 2013

This is the mindset of the newsman, according to Don Henly …

I make my living off the Evening News
Just give me something – something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

If you want people to watch the six o’clock news, which ad is more likely to work?

The surprising new danger in school lunches. Are your kids at risk? Details at six.

The rate of violent crime has been decreasing steadily for years. Details at six.

The first one, of course. And since news is a business, they have to sell what we’re going to buy. So if you watch the news for a while, you’ll be fed a steady stream of bad news. You’ll think the world is falling apart faster and faster every day.

We do have challenges, but there is a case for optimism. A lot of things are getting better. Way better. Even fabulously better. This video presents that position.

Great point, Greg. This are a lot more postive than one would think from watching the news.
